The past year I have been re-introduced to the music of Gary Numan. This and his previous release, Splinter, are incredible albums. They are like dystopian landscapes. I can imagine this as the soundtrack to a Mad Max film. The layers of sound are intense, moody and brilliant. If you''re expecting a pop album, this probably isn''t for you. I hope more people rediscover Gary''s music. He has been around for decades and has been a huge influence on groups like NIN. He recently performed with them and Beck. He deserves a huge audience. If you get the chance to catch him in concert, GO! It''s an amazing experience.

For me, this whole album just flows together and should be listened to as a whole - just as in days gone by, where you listened to AN album, as opposed to just picking out certain songs. But either way, whatever you decide, if you''re already a fan, you''re not going to be disappointed one little bit.
Gary Numan''s voice is really, really clear, which I appreciate too, since I love not only the music, but the sound quality of his voice.
Like many, I was blown away in 1979 when I saw him on TOTP, UK, but didn''t even know he was still making music until a recent headline caught my attention! Thank goodness I caught it, otherwise I would''ve really missed out!!!

Not what I expected...far better. Not only is this a strong album and theme, Gary Numan is still just as great when he first established himself in the 80''s. This may offend some people out there to compare this album to NIN the downward spiral or the fragile on its lyrical aspect and the music which to me is very polished and layered. I love NIN and almost anything trent puts out there yet this is dystopian industrial music at its finest. I don''t think I have a song that is even my least favorite. On the book formatted disc cover... beautifal amd I don''t use that word much to describe most things. It contains lyrics as well as photos montages from his "My Name Is Ruin" video. Look forward to catching up to these newer albums and have allready started relistening to his classics.

Another shining facet on Gary Numan''s jewel...

I followed a link to to the video of ''My Name is Ruin" performed on The Old Grey Whistle Test, unaware that he''d done a new recording, and was very much liking the song and performance, and decided to purchase the album immediately after seeing a touching moment with his daughter Persia at the video''s end. Persia was well composed, but clearly nervous, as one might expect a 12 year old to be. Gary gave her a beautiful hug, and sent her off stage... I imagined myself with my daughter in that scene, and I was truly brought to tears.

So, an impulse purchase was made, based on a touching and emotional experience, and I might have been in for foolish disappointment... No!! A standout effort was my reward :) I''m just finishing my first listen as I write, and It''s just great.

By “Full” I mean everything, every song, order of tracks, production value, theme & lyrics... absolutely mind blowing (i’ve Got over 2,000 retail CDs- this is a MEGA-JACKPOT). Content is moody and pretty, very danceable but not hippity-hoppity. He *created* synth + heart. And he’s never been better than now! Imagine a mix of Depeche Mode and Nine Inch Nails. Lots of beautiful aggression, slamming beats, mad guitars/bass and his voice has never been better! Must Own!

Gary''s voice is a unique contrast to the edgy tone and heavy-ish bass of the composition. What really impresses me, though, is that the overall sound of the album really carries the theme; the lyrics fit the concept. Very well-done overall.

I''ve been interested in Gary Numan''s music since The Pleasure Principle (1979). I preferred his earlier stuff, and stopped buying his albums after Telekon (1980), as he seemed to lose his way (in my opinion) as he experimented with dance and less commercial / metal influenced electronica. After stumbling upon "My Name Is Ruin", Savage is the first Numan album I''ve bought in 37 years. It''s moody and magnificent. It has a Depeche Mode feel to one of the tracks and some east Asian-tinged influences that work very well.

I have to say that I avoided Gary Numan''s albums for many years, as it just got too morose and dark for my tastes. He has continued in that vein, as I understand he has been courting a loyal fanbase up to now, but this album sees several things coming together in a way which signifies big changes may be on the horizon: 1. His strongest bunch of songs for many years - memorable and hard hitting 2. Superb album production makes for sweeping, epic and cinematic soundscapes 3. Where did this great voice emerge from? He used to sing like a dalek... 4. Strong concept album that connects with a large demographic, thanks to Trump pulling out of climate change agreements. Numan chimes with the times, despite the dark lyrics and industrial style music 5. Very good use of middle eastern sounding backing vocals and instrumentation. This contrasts with and softens the sonic blast of industrial noise and synths. Quite eerie and haunting in places. I still wouldn''t say that I could listen to the whole album in one sitting, its just too rich and dark for me. All the songs are strong, but sufficiently similar to cancel each other out if I listen too long. So I dip in and out, which is fine. Standouts that I return to are ''Ghost Nation'' (sticks in my head), ''My Name Is Ruin'' (ditto, and what made me part with my cash, after seeing the stomping Old Grey Whistle Test Special performance with father and daughter clearly relishing his comeback), ''It All Began With You'', and ''Mercy''. Congratulations and I hope this leads to Hollywood knocking on your door, as the logical next career move. One other thing: All those spurious UK press accusations of being emotionless etc. were the result of compounded misunderstandings, perhaps bad management and lack of experience in the younger days. It couldn''t be further from the truth, and if anyone needed further proof then this album is simply dripping with feeling. It has clearly blown a lot of people away already. Genius.

Numan at his best. there are but 4 slight criticisms, but given the theme of the album may be intentional. 1 the case or book the cd came in had no track listing. 2 it seems like the same sound bank is used on all tracks making it a bit samey for the casual listener. 3 an over use of distortion filters or distorted samples. 4 the recording is very loud and very compressed and sadly that ruins the quality. other than the above it really is a work of musical genius. Numan is at his vocal best and the instruments echo and subtly hint at his early hits. it is less of a collection of songs and more of a carefully compiled soundscape with each track having it''s own merits. Haunting minor keys shifting into Majestic majors making epic contrasts and it really keeps you listening and wanting more. with just a little more variety and less compressed distortion it could have raised him up with the giants of electronica such as J.M.Jarre (early stuff obviously), Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream and the Art of Noise. Really looking forward to the next album .... A must buy for Fans of electronic music....all hail and rejoice, the Numan is back.
